Congress Caught in a Twilight Zone

It is bad enough that Congress is ignoring the opinions of many of its constituents with regard to the illegal immigration debate. To add to the hypocrisy, Congress is citing its Constitutional rights in what is a clear case of fraud with regard to Democratic Representative William Jefferson. Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, was allegedly caught on tape accepting a $100,000 bribe. FBI agents obtained a search warrant from a judge and raided the Congressional office of Jefferson, and Jefferson’s home. In the home, agents found $90,000 hidden in a freezer. Not to sound speculative, but put two and two together and Jefferson currently looks guilty as sin.

The level of hypocrisy, however, reaches a boiling point with regard to the House leaders, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who have both condemned the actions of the Justice Department and the FBI. While Pelosi wrote a letter to Jefferson, asking him to resign his seat from the House Ways and Means Committee, she is chastising the raid that put Jefferson in that position to begin with. Not only that, but Pelosi is making a political move, considering that Democrats have tried to paint Washington as a Republican culture of corruption. When someone in their own party feels the heat, the Democrats seem to not care.

The political power play, however, is ongoing on both sides. With the House elections getting closer by the day, there is no doubt that loyalty means nothing. Worse off, the voice of the American voter--which should be the most important thing to those who are in office--isn’t worth anything. That could, however, be the final straw in the long line of hypocrisy that has plagued the nation’s capital.
