The Miami Herald

The Miami Herald is a daily newspaper that is distributed in the Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties of Florida. The Miami Herald has a daily readership of approximately 1 million readers, and a circulation of 300,000 in South Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The average Miami Herald daily edition averages 88 pages and the Sunday edition averages 212 pages. The Miami Herald is one of the largest employers in the Miami area, with over 2000 staff members spread across several bureaus. Of these staff members, about 450 are part of the Miami Herald newsroom. This includes 144 reporters, 29 photographers, and 69 editors.

Over 18 Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded to the staff of the Miami Herald over the 103 years since it began publication. Some of the most famous columnists to come out of the Miami Herald are humorist Dave Barry, Pulitzer Prize winning political commentator Leonard Pitts Jr., and novelist Carl Hiaasen. Current columnists for the Miami Herald include Ana Menendez, Fred Grimm, Edwin Pope, and Ana Veciana-Suarez.

The first edition of the Miami Herald was published on September 15th, 1903. At that time, the Miami Herald was called The Miami Evening Record. The name Miami Herald did not come about until 1910. The Miami Herald changed hands several times over the next 50 years, and in 1946 the paper published an international edition for readers in the Caribbean and Latin America. In 1950, the Miami Herald won its first Pulitzer Prize for reporting on Miami’s organized crime. The 1960s brought construction of Miami Herald offices on Biscayne Bay. The move from the old building to the new building did not interrupt service of the Miami Herald. The issues on March 23rd and 24th in 1963 came out just as scheduled even though the entire office was being relocated.

Currently, the Miami Herald is the U.S.’s 24th largest newspaper.
